Pause and resume tic-tac-toe without changing turns

Pause stops the session and hides the tic-tac-toe board without replacing its marks. When you continue, inspect the saved position before choosing another square. In the main mode, a valid X turn includes the local O response when needed; resuming is not a new move and should not be treated as permission to add another reply.

Press Tab to enter the board. Use arrow keys, Home, or End to move focus; Enter or Space selects a cell. Escape pauses.

How to play

Tic-Tac-Toe rules

You play X against a local computer playing O. Choose an empty cell to place X; the computer then replies. Connect three marks horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. If the board fills with no line, the result is a draw. Arrow keys move focus; Enter or Space selects a cell. The computer uses a complete search, so perfect play can draw rather than guarantee a human win.

Distinguish stopping the session from replacing the round

Use Pause when you want to step away while retaining the current problem. A confirmed reset or new-round choice has a different purpose: it replaces the board. Read a dialog before accepting it if your intention was simply to return to the instructions or stop playing for a while.

The paused presentation hides the board. Do not assume it is a visible analysis diagram you can continue to inspect indefinitely while paused. On continuing, read the marks that reappear rather than relying solely on the move you remember planning. An interrupted session can make the old intention easier to remember than the opponent’s latest actual reply.

Check which side supplied the last mark

In the main computer mode, you choose X and the device supplies O’s legal response if the round remains in progress. That reply belongs to the position created after your action. It is not a remote player who must reconnect when you return, and it is not a delayed extra turn you should add to your written analysis.

For example, you may remember choosing a corner and thinking about a later row. The saved board may already include O in the row’s intended gap. Inspect that square before acting. Resume itself is not an X move or an O move. The next legal decision is based on the coherent current board, not on replaying every remembered tap in order.

Read the result as well as the empty squares

A paused round may return with some squares empty, but occupancy alone does not identify whether another move is legal. A completed line of three ends play immediately, even if several spaces remain. A full board without a winning line is a draw, not a waiting state for an extra mark.

Identify the winning row, column, or diagonal when there is one. Do not describe a reset before a loss as having recovered a draw. If the round is still active, scan your own immediate wins and the opponent’s immediate threats before continuing a future setup. One remembered good defense does not certify that every later mark remains optional.

Understand what local saving can preserve

Progress belongs to this browser when its storage is available and retained. It is not a player account synchronized across phones and computers. Clearing site data, moving to another browser, or using a storage-restricted session can affect which position is available when you return.

If another person shares the browser, they may encounter the same saved game. Check the board before assuming a fresh round begins every time the page opens. Saving a position does not turn it into a public link or an online room, and you do not need to provide a name or email address to continue a local game.

Re-enter through one checkable decision

Before making the first action after a break, name the line you are inspecting and the empty square you plan to use. That small check helps separate the current board from a remembered version before O’s response. If the intended square is occupied, choose a legal alternative rather than attempting to overwrite the mark.

The two-player variant uses human input for both symbols and has a different turn expectation from the main computer mode. Confirm the format if you changed pages before the break. No paused position creates a promise of a forced win, and no unfinished round requires another game to compensate. The goal is to return to the actual state accurately, then decide whether you want to continue, study another position, or end the session by choice.

Frequently asked questions

Does Pause clear the board?

No. It hides the board and preserves the session context rather than confirming a reset.

Can I study the visible board while paused?

The paused presentation hides it; continue before inspecting the actual marks again.

Does resuming place another O?

Resume is not a new legal move; inspect the saved position that already includes the relevant local reply.

Does the game sync across devices?

Not through a player account. Saving is local to the browser when storage is available.

Should I replay my remembered taps?

No. Read the current board and result before choosing one legal next action.
