Snake pause and local saving: resume the actual route

Pause Snake before switching away when you want to stop its continuous movement. The paused view hides the board; it is not a visible analysis screen. Continuing resumes the actual saved position when available, so check the head’s direction and nearby space instead of replaying a remembered sequence of taps.

The game is stationary. Enable JavaScript to use the controls.

The head uses an arrow, the body fills cells, and fruit is marked ●.

Inside the game: steer with arrow keys or WASD. With the board focused, Enter or Space starts or pauses; Escape also pauses. Use Tab, then Enter or Space on the buttons.

Initial head: row 6, column 6. Heading: right. Food is placed when the game starts.

Saved locally; progress does not sync between devices.

Text describes position, heading, and food. This continuously moving game still requires following the visual board; full nonvisual accessibility is not claimed.

Only the saved Snake board will be replaced.

How to play

Snake rules

Choose Start, then steer with arrow keys, WASD, or the direction buttons. Eat fruit to grow by one segment and gain one point. Hitting a wall or your body ends the game. An immediate reverse turn is ignored. Pause and leaving the tab stop movement. The board is 12 × 12, and progress is saved only in this browser.

Stopping input is different from pausing movement

Once Start begins a round, the snake keeps advancing without a new button press for every square. Releasing the directional controls therefore does not stop it. A page that remains visible can still be running while you are no longer touching the phone.

Use the visible Pause control for the decision to stop. The main game also pauses when you leave the tab, but that does not turn every partial gesture or moment of distraction into a safe plan. Distinguish the game’s actual paused state from the fact that your hands happen to be off its controls.

The paused presentation hides the board

Pause stops the session and conceals the play area. It does not promise a visible frozen map on which you can inspect every body segment. Read the continuation control and return to the board deliberately when you want to resume rather than assuming the hidden display is a rendering error.

The direction remains part of the position. Pausing does not rotate the head, legalize a reversal, or remove the body from a dangerous corridor. If you were moving right, a direct left request is still an opposite-direction input after continuing. The break in real time is not an extra movement step that changes the body’s geometry.

Check what the next step will actually do

When the board returns, locate the head, its heading, the border ahead, and the nearby body. Consider one immediate destination before issuing another direction. A fruit you were approaching may require an exit after eating because growth changes how much space remains available.

For example, remembering “turn up, then left” does not prove that the upward step occurred before you paused. If it did not, a rapid left input might still be opposite to the current rightward travel. Use the position you can observe rather than replaying an entire remembered input sequence as if every planned transition had already happened.

Local saving is not an online backup account

Progress is retained in the same browser when the game can use its storage and those data remain available. This is not synchronization across every phone or computer. A different browser, cleared site data, or a storage-restricted session can affect what is available on return.

Read a storage warning rather than treating a previously open tab as proof of an external backup. A shared device can also show a round another person started in that browser. Inspect the current state and result before choosing Start, Continue, or a new game. No name, email address, or player account is needed merely to steer a local round.

New game and Continue answer different intentions

Continue returns to the existing session. A confirmed new-game action replaces it. Read the confirmation when you mean to begin again, and cancel if you only wanted to leave the instructions or change focus. A lost round also cannot be resumed as though the collision had not happened simply by waiting on another tab.

No pause length guarantees a better score, and an unfinished round creates no obligation to play again. You can end the session voluntarily. When you do resume, focus on one real next step and an available exit rather than assuming local saving has solved the route for you. The controls preserve or replace context; they do not remove borders, shorten the body, or turn a recorded position into a promise of a safe continuation.

Frequently asked questions

Does letting go of the controls stop Snake?

No. After starting, movement continues until you pause or the round ends.

Why is the board hidden during Pause?

Concealment is part of the paused presentation; it is not a visible analysis view.

Does pausing make a reverse turn legal?

No. The saved heading still determines which opposite-direction input is ignored.

Does progress sync to another phone?

Not through a player account. Saving depends on the same browser retaining local data.

Is Continue the same as New game?

No. Continue preserves the session context; a confirmed new game replaces it.
